Come celebrate the national champion women’s soccer team!

Carolina beat Penn State 4-1 on Sunday to claim the 2012 NCAA title. The title game was UNC’s 24th NCAA championship game in the 31-year history of the tournament and the team’s 21st NCAA crown.

A celebration will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in Carmichael Arena. Doors open at 5 p.m. The celebration will include the UNC band and cheerleaders, highlight videos, the opportunity to take pictures with the trophy and remarks from Chancellor Holden Thorp and Coach Anson Dorrance.

Sunday’s game was tied 1-1 at halftime. The Tar Heels struck quickly in the second half on Hanna Gardner’s goal less than a minute into the half. Satara Murray scored again with 26 minutes left in the game, then midfielder Ranee Premji notched the final goal at the 15:42.

Junior forward Kealia Ohai, who scored in the opening minute of the game, was the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Murray, who also assisted on Ohai’s goal, was the Most Outstanding Defensive Player. The game was played before a crowd of 6,930 at Torero Stadium at the University of San Diego.
