Brenda Malone, Carolina’s vice chancellor for human resources and interim director of the Equal Opportunity/ADA Office, has been named vice president for human resources at Georgetown University.

Malone, who has more than 30 years of experience in human resources and labor relations, has been the University’s chief human resources officer since 2007, with principal responsibility for staff and non-faculty employees. She came to Carolina from the City University of New York, where she was vice chancellor for faculty and staff relations for 14 years.

In August, Chancellor Carol Folt asked Malone to serve as interim director of the Equal Opportunity/ADA Office, which administers policies protecting equal opportunity and access to all students, faculty and staff.

“Under Brenda’s strong leadership, Carolina has made great strides in providing services and programs for our employees and managers. Her many contributions to the University have strengthened our campus workplace and enhanced the pride and professionalism of our employees,” Chancellor Carol Folt said in an email message to the campus community.

Malone said her new position brings her closer to her family and creates a new set of challenges and opportunities. She will remain at the University until the end of the year and assist with the transition; she assumes her new duties in January.

“I have loved every minute of working at Carolina. It’s a fabulous institution,” Malone said. “I am leaving to continue my life’s journey and to be more connected with my family. I am certain that the future of this University is exciting and bright under Chancellor Folt.”

When Malone arrived on campus, she was associate vice chancellor for human resources in the finance and administration division. Former Chancellor Holden Thorp elevated her position to vice chancellor in 2009, and human resources became a separate unit.

During her tenure, Malone has helped address a wide variety of workforce-related issues, including the effects of state budget cuts and the Bain & Company operational efficiency study as well as major improvements in Housekeeping Services stemming from a consultant’s report, Folt said. Most recently, Malone led the University’s efforts to hire a new Title IX Compliance Coordinator and helped develop plans to create two positions in this key area.

She has transformed the delivery of human resource services across campus to a more decentralized approach that focuses these services in many cases at the school and division level. The move has better positioned the University not only to comply with all applicable federal, state and UNC system policies, but also to implement practices in the best interest of the University workforce. Under Malone’s leadership, the Office of Human Resources has also re-imagined and re-designed supervisory and leadership development programs, including the University Leadership Education and Development Program (ULEAD) for emerging leaders and a new supervisory development program.

Folt thanked Malone for all she has done at Carolina. “Brenda has been a wonderful colleague and asset to Carolina, and the work she and her team have done leave the University well positioned for the future,” she said.

Plans for interim leadership in human resources and the Equal Opportunity/ADA Office will be announced soon.
