Excessive heat has been responsible for about 250 deaths each year in the United States for the past decade.

In 2011, that number is likely to increase.

UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health is committed to supporting local public health preparedness. The school has partnered with Orange County (N.C.) to provide box fans for those who need them. This summer’s sustained heat will endanger many in our community, and your assistance is needed urgently.

Purchase a new box fan for around $20 and bring it to the school or other sites listed below for distribution. This will support local merchants and help others.

Please bring fans to 115 Rosenau Hall or 1106 McGavran-Greenberg Hall.

Off-campus drop-off sites:

The Friday Center
100 Friday Center Drive

Fire Department drop-offs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (If firefighters are out on an alarm, leave fan by the door or try again later.)

Chapel Hill Fire Station #3
1615 E. Franklin Street (corner of Elliott and Franklin St)

Carrboro Main Fire Station
301 W. Main Street, Carrboro

Carrboro Fire Station #2
1411 Homestead Road

A heat advisory is in effect this week for the area. Extreme temperatures and humidity will make it feel 105-110+ degrees. Please visit Environment, Health & Safety’s Heat Stress webpage to learn more about protection during this type of extreme weather, and be sure to distribute the “Be Safe in Hot Weather” notice found on the webpage in UNC departments.
