To strengthen the security of data in ConnectCarolina and prepare for the launch of the Finance and HR/Payroll components, Information and Technology Services (ITS) is implementing changes to ConnectCarolina access in mid-October.

For the protection of sensitive data in ConnectCarolina, ITS requires faculty and staff to use secure systems to access ConnectCarolina on and off campus. For off-campus access to ConnectCarolina, faculty and staff will use VPN (Virtual Private Network) and for on-campus use they will use campus wireless network UNC-Secure. More information on this change can be found at . This change does not affect students because they can only view their own individual information in ConnectCarolina.

At the same time, ITS is launching a portal as the only place to login to ConnectCarolina, which can be reached from the landing page, This affects everyone who uses ConnectCarolina, including faculty, staff, students and alumni. MyUNC will be phased out. The portal is a wrapper around ConnectCarolina, and is necessary to prepare for the addition of the Finance and HR/Payroll to the Student Information and Administration (SIA) component.

Portal Changes for Students

The Student Center login button goes to an aggregate page of the most used student links; this page bypasses the portal. Students need to go the portal for granting and managing proxy and authorized user access, and can reach it by clicking the ‘Home’ button in the upper right.

Portal Changes for Faculty, Staff and Alumni

The login button for faculty, staff and alumni goes to the portal with links to aggregate pages for certain roles. Pages are also reached through the menu navigation from the top bar with one change: faculty and staff need to select SIA Menu from the Main Menu to reach student information and administration pages.

Important: Re-creating Favorites

Many faculty and staff use favorites (shortcuts of frequently used searches or navigation paths to pages) in ConnectCarolina. Because of the additional layer of the portal, current favorites will not work. Please make note of your favorites’ navigation path – the breadcrumbs in the top bar – by saving it a Word document or on a sheet of paper. Then, recreate and resave favorites in the portal, starting from the Main Menu and selecting SIA Menu, then following the navigation path you saved.
