As part of the opening weekend of The Rite of Spring at 100, Carolina Performing Arts hosts “Reflections on the Rite,” a moderated discussion including a panel of world-renowned artists.
Free tickets are available at Memorial Hall Box Office. The panel discussion will begin at 1 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Playmakers Theater on UNC’s campus.
The artists will share their insights into the extraordinary artistic impact the ballet score has had throughout the past century. The panel is part of a three-day series of events and performances, which include a world premiere performance by The Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma and a free screening of the 2009 film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky at the Varsity Theater in Chapel Hill.
Moderated by Carolina Performing Arts Director Emil J. Kang, the panel will include:
• cellist Yo-Yo Ma and musicians from The Silk Road Ensemble
• composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky
• violinist and composer Colin Jacobsen, co-founder of Brooklyn Rider
• pianist and composer Vijay Iyer and filmmaker Prashant Bhargava
• Janet Eilber, artistic director of Martha Graham Dance Company
• master puppeteer Basil Twist
• conductor and chancellor, UNC School of the Arts, John Mauceri
• dean of dance, UNC School of the Arts, Susan Jaffe
• Stravinsky scholar, critic and professor of musicology at UC Berkeley, Richard Taruskin, who give opening remarks.
Incorporating a major international conference, artist residencies, master classes and multidisciplinary collaborations, Rite 100 will offer a dazzling season of 15 public performances created by world renowned choreographers, composers, directors and conductors. Revisiting, re-examining and responding imaginatively to the landmark masterpiece, these artists will present programs that include 11 CPA commissions, representing nine world premieres and two U.S. premieres.
