UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol L. Folt and Provost James W. Dean Jr. on Thursday welcomed two members of a delegation from Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in Germany. Led by President Bernd Engler, the group is at Carolina for two days to explore opportunities to expand the partnership between the universities by enhancing research and collaborations in the health affairs and sciences. The delegation will also be discussing student exchanges and current engagement.

Nici Sauer, exchange coordinator for the Americas and Africa at Tübingen, also participated in the meeting with Folt and Dean.

“Carolina’s longstanding partnership with the University of Tübingen, a historic institution that is internationally recognized for its legacy of excellence in teaching and research, combines the strengths of each university in German and American studies and gives students important exchange opportunities,” Folt said. “We look forward to further discussions about collaborations in oncology, pharmacy and other health sciences that will benefit people around the world.”

While at Carolina, Tübingen faculty members in pharmacy, cancer and water are meeting with faculty and administrators at UNC from the Eshelman School of Pharmacy; the College of Arts and Sciences, including the Study Abroad Office and the Departments of Geological Sciences, Geography, and Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures; the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center; the School of Medicine; and the Gillings School of Global Public Health.

UNC’s partnership with Tübingen has existed for many years. A student exchange program was initiated between the universities in 1986, and faculty and students in Germanic languages and literature and American studies have long been actively engaged in exchanges and collaborations. UNC also hosts a Tübingen graduate student as a teaching assistant each year. In addition, UNC biology professor Jeff Dangl, undertaking joint research with Tübingen’s Center for Plant Molecular Biology at Tübingen, is also a visiting professor at Tübingen.

Engler previously visited UNC in April 2012. In December 2012, Ron Strauss, UNC’s executive vice provost and chief international officer, visited Tübingen.

Engler first spent time at UNC as a research fellow in American studies from 1991 to 1992.
