The Carolina Watt Busters recently made a huge splash in national newsmagazines as the federal Energy Star program featured five members of the UNC-Chapel Hill team in full-page ads appearing in Newsweek, Forbes, Money and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
Chris Martin, director of Energy Management, flanked on the left by 2010 graduate Mady Vital and Jessica O’Hara of Energy Management and on the right by students Jeffrey Veale and Ashley Mui, loom over Morrison Residence Hall. Morrison is the UNC dorm that won the first-ever National Building Contest last year. Morrison reduced its energy usage by 36 percent, more than any other building in the contest run by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Energy Management is defending UNC’s title in this year’s competition, entering four buildings into the field of 245: Carmichael Arena, ITS Manning, Kenan Residence Hall and Kerr Hall. With help from EPA’s Energy Star program, the Carolina Watt Busters team will work to improve energy efficiency in campus buildings to conserve resources and protect the environment. Collaborating with the Watt Busters, the Renewable Energy Special Projects Committee (RESPC) student group will help fund the effort again this year.
In late July, EPA will choose finalists in this Battle of the Buildings. This year’s winner will be announced Nov. 1. Follow the competition as it unfolds on the contest website, Facebook and Twitter.
