On Friday (Dec. 21), the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower will toll 26 times at 9:30 a.m. to honor the 20 children and six adults who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The campus community joins a nationwide observance to remember the lives lost on Dec. 14.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel  P. Malloy signed a proclamation that declared Friday a “Day of Mourning” in the state of Connecticut and requested that residents in his state participate in a moment of silence. He also wrote a letter to every governor, asking each state to join in the moment of silence and remembrance.

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue signed a proclamation for North Carolina and encouraged residents to participate in the moment of silence.
