Students, employees, visitors and the local community can expect President Obama’s visit to Carolina on Tuesday, April 24, to affect traffic and parking.
For safety reasons, several roads and sidewalks will be rerouted or closed for some periods between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the University’s Department of Public Safety has announced.
People traveling on campus and the surrounding community by bus, car, bicycle or on foot may experience delays, closures and detours. Advance planning and preparation is encouraged.
UNC-Chapel Hill students and employees should use their regular weekday parking and transportation arrangements. All campus parking regulations will remain in effect for April 24, 2012. Parking on the landscape, on sidewalks, in fire lanes, in reserved spaces or in permitted parking lots without a valid permit is prohibited.
Campus visitors who have secured the tickets required to attend President Obama’s policy speech on student loans in Carmichael Arena at 1 p.m. Tuesday may wish to explore several parking and transportation options, including using normal weekday public parking in the Town of Chapel Hill parking decks, the University’s Ram’s Head Deck (off Ridge Road, at the eastern end of Kenan Stadium), or park-and-riding from town park –and-ride lots.
Limited public parking will be available on the UNC Campus in the Manning Lot near the Dean E. Smith Center (Chapel Hill Transit buses will run their normal weekday routes from the Manning Lot to Franklin Street and north campus). Special charter buses will operate from Manning Lot to the Student Union from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and again from about 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Free disability parking and shuttle service will be available from the Williamson Lot (across from the Dean E. Smith Center) to the Student Union from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and again from about 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
