Nearly 1,000 people are expected at the 24th annual spring powwow of the Carolina Indian Circle on March 19 at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The free public program organized by the circle, a student group, will be from noon to 6 p.m. in Fetzer Gymnasium on South Road, across from Raleigh Street. Free parking will be available in the Cobb deck off Manning Drive.
“The powwow generally draws dancers from all along the East Coast and a lot of folks from neighboring colleges and universities,” said Clara Sue Kidwell, director of UNC’s American Indian Center. “People from Indian communities throughout the state generally come, and you find a good representation of people from the various tribal communities.”
Food, craft and jewelry vendors will be on hand. Dancers in traditional regalia will compete for cash prizes in categories including fancy dance, traditional dance, grass dance and women’s jingle dancing.
“The powwow presents a unique but great opportunity for current and past members of the Carolina Indian Circle to come together, celebrate and learn from each other,” said UNC senior Rachel Ensing, powwow co-chair, “but most importantly, to have a good time.”
