“She is an outstanding teacher, mentor, and advisor, and is held in the highest regard by undergraduates, graduate students and faculty.”

“He teaches without teaching; he lets his students facilitate discussion while he listens and then helps us to interpret our own thoughts.”

Heartfelt comments such as those are part of nominations each year when Carolina recognizes faculty, staff and students for outstanding teaching. Past winners have been honored at a men’s basketball game, feted at a spring banquet and given stipends in recognition of their teaching abilities. Still, the highest praise comes from the students who nominate their teachers for one of the University Teaching Awards.

Nominate your favorite teacher for a University Teaching Award. The deadline is October 1, 2010.

The University Committee on Teaching Awards considers nominations of deserving faculty members and graduate teaching assistants for distinguished teaching awards.

This year, the committee will recommend recipients for six types of awards: Board of Governors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching, Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Teaching Awards for Post-Baccalaureate Instruction, Awards to Faculty for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (Tanner Awards to Graduate Teaching Assistant, Chapman Family Teaching Awards and University Professor of Distinguished Teaching).

The committee will review the nominees, collect additional information and recommend winners to the Chancellor.
