The award-winning film “In the Land of Blood and Honey” will be screened on Thursday, Jan. 24 in conjunction with the event series “Gender, War and Violence: Remembering the 1990s War on the Balkans,” organized by the joint Duke-UNC Gender, War and Culture Project in collaboration with groups and departments across campus and in the Triangle.

Thursday’s film screening will be held in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium of the FedEx Global Education Center from 5 to 8:30 p.m.  The event will feature roundtable participants including Robert Jenkins, director of UNC’s Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies; Adnan Dzumhur, a graduate student in the department of Germanic and Slavic languages and literatures; and Dubravka Zarkov, an internationally recognized scholar on the Balkan Wars.

Friday’s public lecture will be presented by Zarkov from 4 to 6 p.m. at the UNC Institute for Arts and Humanities in Hyde Hall. During her presentation, Zarkov will discuss the male experience during the wars in Yugoslavia, particularly sexual assaults of men and the reasons these experiences are less well known.

Zarkov is an associate professor at the International Institute of Social Studies at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where she teaches gender, conflict and development. She has authored three books on the subject.
