A public memorial service to celebrate the life of University of North Carolina President Emeritus William C. Friday will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 17) in Memorial Hall.

As seating in Memorial is limited, admission tickets for Memorial and overflow seating with video in Gerrard Hall will be distributed at Memorial starting at 8:30 a.m. The doors of both halls will open at 9 a.m. A remote viewing site will be set up at the Frank Porter Graham Student Union. The service also will be telecast live on UNC-TV, with a repeat broadcast of the service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

A live webstream is also scheduled and can be viewed by clicking here.

Public parking on campus is limited, so those who plan to drive are asked to park at the Rams Head parking deck on Ridge Road and take a free shuttle bus to Memorial.

The service will feature several speakers, including state officials, university leaders and friends: UNC President Tom Ross; Gov. Beverly Perdue; former Gov. Jim Hunt; UNC President Emeritus C.D. Spangler Jr.; Carolina faculty members Hodding Carter and James H. Johnson; journalist Charlie Rose; daughter Mary Friday Leadbetter; and Friday assistant Virginia Taylor.

Special music by a choir and brass quintet is planned, and music groups from other campuses will be taking part. The bell at South Building will chime to begin the service. At its conclusion, Carolina’s Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower and bells at other UNC campuses will toll simultaneously in Friday’s honor.
