UNC is helping educate motorists and pedestrians on what they can do to make roads safer for pedestrians in the new “Watch for Me NC” campaign.
Each year, more than 350 pedestrians are injured or killed in collisions with vehicles in the Triangle area. In an effort to address this critical safety issue, local governments, universities and agency partners have teamed up to launch “Watch for Me NC.”
The campaign, which targets the Triangle communities of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, consists of pedestrian and driver-focused safety messages on buses, radio stations, gas pumps, university campuses and other locations throughout the Triangle.
The messages will be accompanied by an effort by area police to enforce pedestrian laws, with an emphasis on ensuring that motorists are yielding to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation, the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are providing support for the campaign. The campaign will run through the end of October.
