Carolina Performing Arts opens the 2011-2012 season with two nights of performances by the celebrated European orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.

On September 7 and 8, Memorial Hall will host the only North American concert by this internationally renowned ensemble.

Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is described as one of the rare chamber orchestras that truly bring music to life through their unerring instinct for imaginative and passionate programs. The award-winning ensemble arrives in Chapel Hill after their South American tour.

The orchestra will be joined by the George Kennedy Distinguished Professor of Music at UNC Stefan Litwin, a pianist and composer who has performed at numerous world premieres and collaborated with celebrated composers and orchestras. In a review by the Berliner Tagesspiegel, Litwin was described “(as if) Beethoven himself were sitting at the piano.”

The Wednesday, Sept. 7, performance will feature Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 in F minor (“La Passione”), Hob. I:49; Beethoven’s Wind Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103; and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15.

The Thursday, Sept. 8, performance includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 in D minor, Hob. I:80; Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for String Orchestra, Op. 4; and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37.

Tickets are still available and prices start at $10 for students and $29 for the general public. To purchase tickets, call the Memorial Hall Box Office at 919-843-3333, or visit www.carolinaperformingarts.org to purchase online or to see a full list of performances for the upcoming season.
